When I began this research project in 2012, there were only two places in Santo Domingo where the public could view a painting by Carlos Goico. The first was an informal gallery on Calle Sanchez, just north of El Conde owned by Senor Enrique Guzman. He had one painting on display, a beautiful Diablo Cojuelo.
The second was a gallery in the Santa Barbara barrio owned by Manuel Bolos called “El Duende del Caribe”. Manuel was a great friend of Carlos Goico and always exhibited several of his works. His collection of Goico’s works is extensive.
I mention this because back then I thought that few if any people were interested in Goico’s works. I was wrong. Over the past year, I have been fortunate to meet many Goico admirers like myself. Goico’s fellow artists, friends from his early years, collectors, patrons, critics and gallery owners. I was also proud to lend 11 paintings to the first Exhibition of Goico’s works since his death in 2009. This event, curated by Iris Perez at the “Laboratorio” drew hundreds of visitors and helped to inspire a renewed interest in promoting this unique and immensely talented artist.
***The following is a partial list that will be continually updated as we learn more about the life and art of Carlos Goico.
